I have a tumultuous relationship when it comes to writing. Growing up, I hated writing essays or any other long-form assignments for class. Instead of caring about the craft of writing, teachers were more focused on page counts and finding keywords to see if you read the book for the assignment.
The moment writing clicked for me was in college, especially in my journalism classes. The key was developing clear and concise writing. The only problem I have with the style of journalistic writing is how it tries to remove the writer’s sense of self. Classical journalists vie to be unbiased in their writing, but I find that the best writing comes from journalists who understand their bias and do not let it harm their work.
Once I find the core of what I am writing about, the words tend to flow quite easily. Having a journalism mindset aids the process, where you need the skills to produce a breaking news story at the drop of a hat. My only problem is when I’m stuck in the preliminary phase of writing, I tend to drift off. From there it is also easy for me to become distracted and shift my focus.
My main focus on writing has been covering the video game industry, anywhere from breaking news to reviews. My writing sits at a side hobby, but I hope to expand my scope more to professional freelancing. I aspire to grow my skills as a writer and develop into a more well-rounded presence online.
